To satisfy her passion of helping suffering patients overcome chronic pain, Dr. Motlagh has dedicated the last two decades to focusing on researching and treating patients with occlusion related TMJ problems.

After graduating from OHSU School of Dentistry, Dr. Motlagh sought extensive training in post-doctorate institutes such as the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Spear Institute & Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.

As a Fellow of International College of Cranio-mandibular Orthopedics, Dr. Motlagh's passion for offering a conservative approach to TMJ disorder treatment lead to the research and development ofMyoaligner;

a patented treatment protocol that helps realign the bite and the jaw non-surgically & by relaxing the jaw muscles, ultimately alleviating the majority of TMJ related pain and headaches. Dr. Motlagh enjoys collaborating with her colleagues through study clubs and seminars and enjoys helping her patients while practicing dentistry in Portland Oregon.

Dr. Tennant is passionate about helping her patients breathe better for improved overall health. For the past 2 decades, she has put the primary focus of her practice on occlusion related Sleep Breathing Disorders. On a mission to help rid the world of Sleep Apnea, Dr. Tennant is on the Clinical Advisory Board of VIVOS Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Tennant is now treating people of all ages with a proprietary, non-invasive, nonsurgical treatment option for the treatment of mild to moderate dental sleep apnea, snoring, and sleep-disordered breathing stemming from malocclusion.

Dr. Tennant works closely with specialists in both dentistry and medicine to provide patients with latest options of bio-remodeling to achieve maximally functional upper airways. In order to address the root cause, Dr. Tennant implements a variety of treatment modalities such as the VIVOS system. By remodeling the upper jaw and the mid-face, she helps patients breath and swallow more efficiently. This method also balances and enhances the facial aesthetics, giving patients a more youthful look.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disease where there is blockage in the sleepers airflow, resulting in oxygen deprivation in the body and brain. Snoring is different than OSA in that the sleeper still breathes continuously, although very noisily.

Failure of the upper and lower jaw to develop properly is a common cause of obstructive sleep apnea. This condition, called maxillary hypoplasia and/or mandibular retrognathia/retrusion, often results in a compromised upper airway.

A person suffering from OSA may stop breathing many times each night, repeatedly experiencing small suffocations which can last up to several minutes at a time. When carbon dioxide levels build up in the body and oxygen levels plummet, the brain signals the body to 'wake up' in order to facilitate satisfactory breathing patterns.

People suffering from OSA may or may not wake up consciously. Many times the only indication of the brain's attempt to reboot the body is demonstrated by the abrupt choking, gasping or coughing for air during what might be considered a typical bout of snoring.

Traditional methods of treatment for sleep apnea typically consist of surgical procedures or the use of a cumbersome CPAP machine. Recent advances in technology have led to the development of dental sleep apnea treatments that can significantly reduce incidents of sleep apnea in individuals. These dental sleep apnea treatments are also much more cost-efficient and user-friendly than existing conventional sleep apnea treatment methods. At Aesthetic Smiles, our sleep apnea dentists are top-rated professionals with extensive experience in dental sleep apnea treatments. If you are having difficulty sleeping and suffering from sleep apnea, contact the sleep apnea dentists at Aesthetic Smiles.

The sleep apnea dentists at Aesthetic Smiles are here to help you overcome sleep apnea and the dangerous medical problems that it causes. Our dental sleep apnea treatments are carefully designed to suit the needs of each patient. With years of experience using dental sleep apnea treatments, our sleep apnea dentists are confident they can help you sleep better. We help treat sleep apnea in patients all across Oregon, including:

As a leading sleep apnea treatment center servicing Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding areas, Aesthetic Smiles strives to provide solutions to sleep apnea problems in our patients. Our sleep apnea dentists will work diligently with you to determine the best course of action when treating your condition.

Oftentimes, excessive snoring will lead to the development of more severe sleep apnea. Because of this, it is crucial to address snoring as a significant factor for breathing problems while you sleep. Our sleep apnea dentists will work with you to determine how bad your snoring is and what treatment options or solutions are available. With the right dental professionals by your side, you will be able to overcome sleep apnea and enjoy long, restful sleep during the night.

There are multiple treatment options for sleep apnea, and the right one for you is dependent on several factors. Dental sleep apnea treatments may work for one patient experiencing mild to moderate sleep apnea yet may not work as effectively with another individual. That is why it is crucial to contact the sleep apnea dentists at Aesthetic Smiles to receive an evaluation and treatment recommendations.

Due to the many factors that contribute to sleep apnea and the importance of finding an effective treatment for it, sometimes surgical sleep apnea treatments are advised. Our sleep apnea dentists will work with you to determine the best method to control snoring and sleep apnea. You will rest easy knowing that Aesthetic Smiles is working to provide you with a better nights sleep.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ disorder) affects the temporomandibular joints located where the cheekbone and jaw bone meet. The joint acts as a sliding hinge, which allows the free movement of the jaw bone when in motion. TMJ disorder can cause significant pain and discomfort.

The degenerative nature of TMJ disorder tends to cause more and more orofacial pain along the upper jaw area where it meets the cheekbone. If left untreated for any length of time, simple acts such as chewing, speaking, and even yawning can cause significant pain. At our premier TMJ and facial pain clinic, Aesthetic Smiles will thoroughly examine a patient to determine the disorders progression. Depending on the severity, our dental professionals will outline what treatment options are available and explain the process in detail to our client.

With our experience in TMJ treatment, our specialists know how to effectively reduce pain and discomfort for those that suffer from TMJ disorder. Our state-of-the-art TMJ and facial pain clinic paves the way for a multi-pronged approach to TMJ disorder treatments. It provides the foundation for better health overall and successfully eliminates TMJ disorder. Our TMJ clinic in Portland works with all of our patients, providing them confidence and a renewed sense of energy once their TMJ disorder has been alleviated.

The TMJ syndrome treatment process can be approached differently for everyone. We start with a comprehensive exam to find the root cause of the problem and often address the issue with a multidisciplinary approach, bringing other specialists on board to decide the best treatment plan.

For the first three months, we focus on non-invasive techniques to reprogram and relax the jaw muscles using Myoaligner protocols. Once the TMJ symptoms are alleviated, the patient has the option to use the oral devices long term, or transition comfortably into orthodontic or restorative treatment as needed.

Update July 2022 This used to be a place where you can get decent work done, front desk was always horible though. Lately, everyone that I know that was going here (family, friends, coworkers and even me) was dignosed with gum disease which is impossible...and forced (recommended) to do deep cleaning, full mouth x-ray, exams etc. Some of them were told insurance will cover the x-ray cost but they end up paying the full amount because of how careless is the staff here. This place is insurance fraud because all they care is how much of insurance money they can get from you so everyone who goes here is diagnosed with gum disease... I will make sure to report this place to authorities and you should too if you feel something was wrong because it probably is. Below is my previous review (3-4 years back) and as you can see there was always fraud when it comes to payments on your side or insurance. From all the people I recommended I was the last believer that this place is still good but they lost me too now... The only dentist I trust! I have recommended this place to my friends and co workers and they all love it. The billing services on the other side are horrible, I am getting bills to pay even though I paid for it after each visit. Someone needs to be fired!

I came looking for reviews when I was considering getting the Myoaligner, and there weren't any related to that specifically - I wanted to leave this in the hopes that I might help someone else. I came to Dr. Motlagh on a referral, trying to find the cause of (and relief for) my persistent headaches. During the initial consult, I felt a bit uneasy when it seemed ALL of my symptoms (and more I never knew I had until she told me I did, like facial asymmetry and a narrow roof of my mouth) were designed to make me a perfect candidate for the Myoaligner - which, coincidentally, she invented. The cost also gave me some pause. The appointments and appliance together are nearly $6,000. I was told they're "out of network for everyone" which also should have made me hesitate. This ended up being a wholly out of pocket cost, with my insurance (to this point) only agreeing to apply a few hundred to my deductible. Since she was referred by another doctor, I decided to ignore my doubts and move forward. The measurements and fitting for the appliance are a sort of hodge-podge collections of tests and measurements and TENS treatments that take a few hours to complete. Again I felt some apprehension about this whole thing when Dr Motlagh had me put in a rubbery tooth mold as a temporary indicator and claimed that I was *immediately* stronger and more flexible. At this point, I felt like I had already paid a few thousand dollars, so I might as well continue and try the appliance, or that money would have been for nothing. A few weeks later I got the appliance, which on the plus side, matches your teeth and is very subtle. On the negative side, I was surprised to find out I was the first to have some "new" version of the device (she hadn't mentioned that) and it was also EXTREMELY thin, to the point where it had a hole in one spot. It seemed unlikely that wearing something so small would have a profound impact on my jaw pain/ alignment. Dr. Motlagh and the other doctor remarked several times that "it was a very small adjustment" and I would be a great candidate for an orthodontic fix. I felt confused that she'd prescribed a $3,750 device for a very small misalignment. She also filmed a promotional video of the device in my mouth without asking, describing fictitious symptoms I had never complained about, and getting annoyed with me when I winced during the video (she was dragging a plastic dental cheek retractor around in my mouth and over my gums with no regard for the discomfort she was causing). She walked off afterwards without a word. I wore the device all the time, as directed. When I came in for my "adjustments", I told Dr. Motlagh about my concerns - I was having MORE headaches, instead of the relief she promised. The device was irritating my tongue. I found I was clenching my jaw more than normal, either because my teeth were a bit closer together or because of the unusual sensations, or..? Wearing the device at night (instead of my mouth guard) meant I was waking up with terrible headaches. She dismissed all of my concerns out of hand. During these appointments, she would just TENS my jaw and then file down the device where my teeth were tapping. The device I have now is thinner than a fingernail in most places and cracking. She said this was "fine" and it would still work. I stopped going in for these check ups and wearing the device after about a month of terrible headaches and discomfort. I worked with my insurance to try and at least get some of the money counting toward my out of pocket limit for the year - so far, no luck. I've spoken with Katie (who is very nice, by the way) at Aesthetic Smiles a few times as well as my insurance company - I am not sure where the problem lies but I will keep trying. If you have TMJ/TMD issues - talk to your dentist, wear a nightguard, get a PT referral, see a chiropractor! Hope this helps someone.

I went for my consultation appointment on 4-23-19 and told them I needed to use my insurance. My insurance was out of network but would still pay a large portion of the costs. I was told that they got pre-approval and I could go ahead with service. I paid over $3,750 up front. Aesthetic smiles forgot to send in the preauthorization before they started services. Because of their mistake now I will not get reimbursed by insurance. I've been fighting with the insurance company for over a year. I have notified Aesthetic Smiles of their mistake and they won't reimburse me. I am a teacher and this out of pocket payment was not easy to make? It just doesn't seem right. Their mistake should be their loss. We all make mistakes, but when we make mistakes we need to own up to them and fix it. On the other hand, she did quality work, she helped my TMJ pain and the office staff was nice. I hope they do the right thing and reimburse me.

I am a retired Registered Dental Hygienist of 35, years, so I know great dentistry. Dr. Motlagh is a great dentist. She has the most wonderful staff as well. They are all welcoming and warm. It is like going to the home of good friends. They are always asking if they can get me anything( coffee, water etc.) Dr. Motlagh has great knowledge in the area of Occulsion, which is the foundation of a healthy and comfortable bite. She considers the whole body in relationship to how teeth should fit together in a ideal bite, preventing excessive wear( shortened teeth) and discomfort. She presents her treatment plan for optimal health. However, she never shames the patient into work they are hesitant to proceed with. I have worked in offices where it is "all about the money and working smarter not harder". Not so at Dr. Motlagh's practice. In fact, I found her charges more reasonable than at my last dental office. She runs on time and is considerate of the patient's time. She is fast and efficient, and uses the latest technology. My husband is so impressed with Dr. Motlagh, he has decided to change dentists and become one of her new patients. I can not say enough good things about Dr. Motlagh and her entire staff.I feel blessed to have been referred to her by my periodontist's office. jackie snook RDH
