Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural color of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface or damaging it. Usually the original shade of the tooth is whitened to a lighter color, rather than being turned completely white.
As we get older our teeth get darker. This is partly due to our getting older, but it is also caused by the foods we eat and drink, and by other habits such as smoking. Tea, coffee, blackcurrant juice, red wine and other foods that have strong colors can have an effect on the overall colour of our teeth. Teeth may also darken as a result of some antibiotics.
Professional bleaching is the most usual method of tooth whitening. Your dentist will assess you first to see whether tooth whitening is suitable for you. They will tell you about the options you have for tooth whitening and which will be the most suitable for you.
The most common type of whitening is called dentist-supervised home whitening. You will have trays made specially to fit into your mouth like gum-shields. The whitening gel is then put in the trays and you will be given a routine to follow at home.
Another option is called chair-side whitening. You will be told if you are suitable for the treatment, and your dentist will supervise it. First the dentist, hygienist or therapist will put a rubber shield or a gel on your gums to protect them. They will then apply the whitening product to your teeth, again using a specially made tray.
The active ingredient in the whitening product is usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel and dentine of the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.
There is also chair-side power whitening. Although this is often called laser whitening, it is not a laser that is used. Gel is painted onto your teeth and then a light is shone onto the gel to speed up the whitening reaction. During this procedure, a soft material is placed over your gums to protect them.
Private charges will vary from practice to practice and region to region. Chair-side whitening will be more expensive than professionally supervised home bleaching. We recommend you get a written estimate of the cost before you start any treatment.
The effects of whitening are thought to last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. Ask your dentist for their opinion before you start the treatment.
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
Home kits are cheaper but they are not always assessed for safety and tend to be more acidic. So there is a chance that these products could damage your teeth and gums. Because tooth whitening is a complicated procedure we advise that you always talk to your dentist before starting the treatment.
There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth they may be effective at removing staining, helping to restore the natural colour of your teeth. Therefore, they may improve the overall appearance of your teeth. Whitening toothpaste may also help the effect to last after your teeth have been professionally whitened.

Sometimes. Many dead teeth become discoloured after a root filling. If the tooth has been root-treated, the canal (which contained the nerve) may be reopened. The whitening product is applied from the inside to whiten the tooth.
You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drink you have that can stain your teeth. Dont forget, stopping smoking can also help prevent discolouration and staining.

My experience has always been consistently the same. I enjoy the Dr. she is always sweet and friendly and so are the staff. My teeth look new and whiter from a cleaning and polish. I appreciate the services I receive. I have been going here over 4 years. I know I see a lot of frustrated patients (due to their own challenges) that come can scare people away from going but our teeth are a very important part of our body everything is interconnected but that happens at home taking care of yourself a tip invest in electric tooth brush and bulk floss sticks at Costco.

I went to Aesthetic Edge a couple weeks ago, got full exam done as well as a cleaning. VERY Satisfied, Doctor Gill was very caring for me especially when I had pain on one tooth. She helped me understand everything that I needed done. This is my new dentist! The ONLY place that has made me feel comfortable with getting work done in my mouth. :) highly recommended!!!

The one star is literally for the staff who you can tell try and help, I already had not had a not so pleasant experience with them, after I payed out of pocket for a crown that looks like a child's tooth was placed and her heavy hand and rushed work, I went back for a cleaning (what I've heard she's only good for) after my X-rays and two strokes into my cleaning she tell the tech to take pictures and see if she could get a deep cleaning (more money out of my insurance) she and I know damn well I don't need a deep cleaning, I get cleanings every six months as recommended. She went off to another patient and I let them know I'd be leaving. Never again will I be wasting my time or money here!

Bad Experience The are good for Cleaning Nothing Else My Wife went in to get her wisdom teeth taken out and after they made her incision, she was told that they wouldn't be able to complete the procedure. She was then referred to another dentist where she then had to make her own appointment while she still had the open incision. That dentist could also not perform the procedure and she was then sent to a surgeon to finally get her wisdom teeth removed. She had no pain meds the whole time until she reached the surgeon. Do not go here.

The Doctor here is so understanding. She's quick and gets the job done. Her staff did change a bit recently however all very friendly and happy to make yu smile. I have been here since I moved to Fresno and I just love it. The Doctor is very upfront about everything and let's yu make the decisions. After all it's yur smile. I definitely recommend this dentistry to anyone looking for a dentist who knows how to treat yu. Plus they're kid friendly!!

Stay away from this dental practice. She, and her staff, are very unprofessional and border on incompetent. On my last appointment with her office a couple of weeks ago I was supposed to get a permanent crown down after a root canal. A procedure she referred me to another practice to get down. The day my root canal was done I made the extra effort of driving over to her practice to drop the paperwork so we could expedite removal of the temporary crown and putting in the permanent one. When I arrived for my appointment weeks later, they had no idea what was going on with my treatment. They tried to numb the right side of my mouth, but my root canal had been done left side. When I questioned what was going on (and had a tense back and forth with them for 45 minutes) they informed me that they had no record of me having any root canal done and they needed to "verify my story" with a brand-new set of x-rays as if I was a new patient; essentially starting from scratch. I was more than frustrated and disappointed by a doctor, and her staff, having no idea what they were doing for me in terms of treatment. No DDS, or any doctor for that matter, should be so clueless and lost in the weeds in terms of patient care. Save your time, money, pain, and discomfort and STAY AWAY from AESTHETIC EDGE and the dental (mal)practice of MANKIRAT GILL, DDS.

Dr. Gill is the best dentist I have ever come across. I love how she pays great attention to detail and plans the best treatment for the patient. I had my front teeth fillings done and must say her work is aesthetically pleasing. She and her staff are very warm and welcoming. I have a few family members that go here and they really like this office, they says the doctor is really nice. The day my mom came in to her appointment the staff was really friendly with her and the doctor was supper nice with her she explained her treatment to her and was really patient when doing the cleaning on her. The front staff was also really nice. Overall this has been the best dental office she has ever been to and the best doctor in town.
