A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the treatment of all forms of periodontal disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis, and gingival recession.

The American Dental Association recognizes periodontics as one of the nine specialties of dentistry. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three years of additional education beyond dental school.

By choosing a specialist you will benefit from the latest procedures for treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants tailored to your needs. In addition, Drs. Bhola, Kolhatkar & Cabanilla Jacobs can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.

Periodontal treatment is necessary when various conditions affect the health of your gums and the regions of your jawbone that hold your teeth in place. Retaining your teeth is directly dependent on proper periodontal care and maintenance. Healthy gums enhance the appearance of your teeth, like a frame around a beautiful painting. When your gums become unhealthy, they can either recede or become swollen and red. In later stages, the supporting bone is destroyed and your teeth will shift, loosen, or fall out. These changes not only affect your ability to chew and speak. They also spoil your smile.

Periodontal diseases are ongoing infections of the gums that gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Periodontal disease affects one or more of the periodontal tissues: alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum, or gingiva.

While there are many diseases which affect the tooth-supporting structures, plaque-induced inflammatory lesions make up the majority of periodontal issues and are divided into two categories: gingivitis and periodontitis. While gingivitis, the less serious of the diseases, may never progress into periodontitis, it always precedes periodontitis.

Dental plaque is the primary cause of gingivitis in genetically-susceptible individuals. Plaque is a sticky colorless film, composed primarily of food particles and various types of bacteria, which adhere to your teeth at and below the gum line. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth, even minutes after cleaning. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums. Gums may become inflamed, red, swollen, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth causing pockets (spaces) to form. If daily brushing and flossing is neglected, plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line.

If gingivitis progresses into periodontitis, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorates. The progressive loss of this bone, the alveolar, can lead to loosening and subsequent loss of teeth. Periodontitis is affected by bacteria that adhere to the tooths surface, along with an overly aggressive immune response to these bacteria.

Periodontal disease is dangerous in that it is often painless and symptomless. 80% of Americans will be afflicted with periodontal disease by age 45, and 4 out of 5 patients with the disease are unaware they have it.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Kolhatkar and the staff at Advanced Periodontics and Implantology! After having a lengthy procedure done due to a horrific auto accident, I have had 2 dental emergencies. Dr. Kolhatkar and her staff rushed me in and went above and beyond to help me. I'm blown away by the efficiency, compassion and thoroughness of Dr. Kolhatkar! If you're looking for a good Periodontist, look no further. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kolhatkar at Advanced Periodontics and Implantology in Plymouth. Special shout out to Kristie, one of her staff members who was exceptionally kind and efficient!

Received very good care from Dr Shilpa Kolhatkar and the staff. Went in on an emergency basis and they were able to do a crown lengthening to save the tooth. Had another tooth that needed an implant. They were very open and transparent on costs and procedures. Very pleased and highly recommend.

Very well-run office, very friendly and knowledgeable staff all throughout - and I can't say enough good things about Dr. Kolhatkar! She's a truly excellent doctor, kept me extremely well-informed the whole way, and everything turned out exactly the way she said it would. I had my procedure right before a holiday weekend, and she made sure I had a way to directly contact her if there were any complications (of course, there were no complications, but I greatly appreciated her making sure I knew I was in good hands). Also was very appreciative of the extensive amount of directions to follow, I did everything it suggested and everything healed quickly and perfectly!

Terrific Staff! The office is run very efficiently, we have been seen ahead of our appointment time! All staff very kind to my daughter, who has intellectual disability and that is priceless. The Dr. spent time explaining all the procedures and time frame to us, which was very helpful. I highly recommend this practice for all your oral surgery needs!

I hope I don't make this too long, but in hopes to help someone avoid seeing 4 other dentist implant specialist like me. having and paying two of the other 4, for bone graft and down payments. All for nothing, do to no fault of my own. I could go on, but what I really want to say is how much right from the beginning, I liked dr.Bhola his kindness professionalism knowledge his confidence in he knew, he knew, what he was doing. After my experience since 2018, that ment alot, even though I was still unsure because of the other two dentists and what I had to go through. But after only 5/6 mths the implants is in. Everything the others promised, he actually did. But what really put him& his office over the top, beside all I just said, is i was very late for my appointment, thinking it was a different day. They still allowed me to come. Now knowing how busy,& booked up they are, that was incredible. And u will see, when u go, he has alot of patients. I can't say enough of the kindness,I was still treated with after being late, By dr and his assistant Kelly. Thank u Advanced peridontics.

I had a dental exam yesterday, and my dentist provided me a letter of referral for work. Called this specialist, and they want to redo my exam, charged in full (my insurance only offers 1 exam in 6 months), because they refuse to use the results of the exam I had yesterday. Will never use. Rude on the phone. No empathy.

Dr Kolhatkar and her staff were great. I had a tooth extraction, bone graph and base implant done. The staff was helpful and professional. Dr. Kolhatkar explained the process thoroughly. I had minimal pain on both the extraction and the base implant. I would recommend them to everybody and have done so.

Dr. Bohla is absolutely the best doctor to go to for any type of implant work. I've had three implants done by him and each time his work has been exceptional. Equally important as the quality of his work is the way he and his staff treat patients; they really care about you, take time to speak to you and treat you like family! I would not trust any other dentist/doctor at the same level, I know he is looking out for my best interest.

If there were ten stars I would definitely give it that! I've done a cosmetic gum lengthening with Dr. Bhola and the whole process from A to Z was amazing! I've done this surgery years ago with another surgeon from a different office, but I really wasn't happy so I know what a bad job is for this particular cosmetic procedure. Dr. Bhola was very informative and well prepared with what he wanted to change. I noticed immediate results and was very pleased with the results. I went home and didn't need any medication for any sort of pain. I would definitely recommend him for a beautiful smile. I'm addition to his great team, he is definitely the one for you. Don't hesitant and go with this amazing surgeon. Sirina
