As a child, Andrew Samuel was always impressed by his dentist-a smart, kind, gentle man who spent his days making people smile. Loving science, Andrew knew that he wanted to spend his grown-up days using scientific discoveries to help those around him. After spending a few high school summers volunteering at Jersey Shore Medical Center's Dental Clinic, he knew that he was destined for a career in dentistry.

Andrew R Samuel, D.M.D, is a graduate of Boston Universitys prestigious Six-Year Combined Liberal Arts/Dental Education Program and Boston Universitys School of Graduate Dentistry. After receiving his dental degree, Dr. Samuel completed two additional years of specialty training in Periodontology also at Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. He was then appointed to the faculty as Assistant Clinical Professor, where he taught postgraduate students in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology. In addition, Dr. Samuel participated in research and practiced periodontics in the Boston area before moving back to his native Ocean, New Jersey where he opened his solo practice in January 1996. He continues his academic contribution by teaching periodontics in the General Practice Residency Program at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. He was recognized for his dedication to the dental residents and excellence in teaching by being awarded the 'Attending Specialist of the Year Award ' in 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

At Advanced Periodontics and Dental Implants, LLC, Dr. Samuel performs all phases of periodontal therapy, with an emphasis on regenerative treatment. He uses minimally invasive surgical and nonsurgical therapies, laser treatment and the latest techniques in esthetic and reconstructive periodontics. In addition, he is certified in several dental implant systems. As part of a dental implantology team, Dr. Samuel provides treatment planning and surgical implant placement for patients requiring implants. Dr. Samuel is recognized for his use of Computer Guided Implant Surgery using 3-Dimensional imaging, digitally generated surgical templates and Image Guided Navigation (X-Guide) for precise implant placement.

Dr. Samuel has been recognized as a NJ Top Dentist by NJ Monthly Magazine every year since 2009. He is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association, the Monmouth Ocean County Dental Society, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He is an attending periodontist at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J. Dr. Samuel serves on the boards of his synagogue and a private elementary school.

When left untreated, periodontal (gum) disease can not only compromise the look and function of your smile, it can also put you at a greater risk for other potentially serious health conditions. Fortunately, Dr. Andrew R. Samuel can address gum disease at each of its stages to help you maintain optimal oral and overall health with periodontal treatments at his Ocean, NJ, practice.

Gum disease is one of the most common health problems in the country, affecting more than 65 million Americans. Poor dental hygiene, smoking, and a compromised immune system are the leading causes of gum disease. Although patients of all ages can suffer from the condition, those over the age of 65 are at a higher risk. In its early stages, symptoms of gum disease can include inflammation, bad breath, and bleeding gums. As the disease progresses, teeth can begin to loosen or fall out, and you may experience tissue recession and jawbone degeneration.

In addition to the negative effects on your smile and oral health, gum disease can also dramatically impact your overall wellbeing. Studies have linked the condition to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Furthermore, Dr. Samuel can sometimes diagnose diabetes based on certain symptoms of periodontal disease.

At Advanced Periodontics and Dental Implants, we take a comprehensive, personalized approach to treating gum disease. This begins with a thorough diagnosis at our practice. Once we have identified the cause of your concerns, we can begin creating a priority-based roadmap to address your most pressing needs first and ultimately help you achieve optimal oral health.

If Dr. Samuel spots the early stages of periodontal disease, he can usually effectively treat it with non-invasive methods, such as performing a thorough cleaning or prescribing antibiotics, mouthwashes, or other medications. When oral bacteria begins to affect a moderate amount of gum tissue, we will often perform a scaling and root planing procedure. In addition, Dr. Samuel will educate you about your diagnosis and treatment and instruct you on proper hygiene practices to help you maintain good oral health between visits.

  • Periodontal pocket reduction:As oral bacteria accumulates along periodontal tissues, it can create pockets around teeth. During periodontal pocket reduction, Dr. Samuel will gently fold back gum tissue, treat oral bacteria, and then secure the tissue back into place.

The LANAP protocol uses the PerioLase MVP-7 laser to treat gum disease without cutting the gums or placing stitches. This advanced device providesmore comfortable treatmentand involves little to no postoperative discomfort.

In most cases, patients return to their normal daily activities immediately after the LANAP procedure. Typically, this treatment requires less than 24 hours of downtime. In contrast, recovery can take two to four weeks after traditional surgery with a scalpel.

With LANAP, the laser simply seals the treatment area, meaning the tissues stay completely intact. Unlike conventional surgery, the laser also prompts the bodys natural healing response, encouraging the renewal of both bone and soft tissue for a healthier smile.

Generally, treatment with LANAP costs about the same as conventional gum surgery with less pain and higher rates of success. In addition, many insurance companies provide coverage for LANAP. The final cost of your treatment for gum disease will depend on a few factors, including the dentist you choose and thenumber of teeth being treated. In many cases, the LANAP protocol is used as a full-mouth periodontal treatment.

Generally, LANAP is recommended as an alternative treatment for conventional gum surgery. Traditional forms of gum surgery use a scalpel to remove tissue so your dentist can access bacteria and diseased tissue inside the gum pocket. In contrast to traditional gum surgery, LANAP is minimally invasive and precisely targets diseased tissue to maintain the health of your gums.

For many patients, the LANAP protocol offers a unique opportunity to regenerate lost tissue and fully restore the health of their gums. Contact a dentist to find out more about this innovative procedure today.

I was referred to Dr. Samuel from primary dentist. I was able to get an appt fairly quickly. He spent an hour with me going over treatment plans and options. I didn't feel like a number in line! He was very re-assuring for me since I have been afraid of dentists my entire life. His office is clean and they take every precaution for your safety. From the front desk to his hygienists, everyone is amazing. For the first time in my life I am no longer afraid. I appreciate you Dr. Samuel and your entire team!

In a world where health and safety concerns continue to escalate exponentially, it is now even more important than ever before to find medical professionals that we trust. Many years ago, I had the great fortune to meet and be treated by Periodontist Dr. Andrew Samuel. I was immediately impressed (and I am not easily impressed) with the thorough and efficient way the office was run as well as the immaculate conditions of both the waiting area and exam rooms. Of course, then came the really important test! After years of deep cleaning, invasive dental work and fast talking medical jargon, I was sure I was about to have a painful experience. To my surprise, Dr. Samuel was clear, thorough, patient, and an excellent listener. But I was still expecting pain! To my amazement, Dr. Samuel was so gentle that not only were his exams and procedures, painless, but I could barely feel his hands working in my mouth! His careful gentle touch and remarkable precision were incomparable! After being amazed by a pain-free experience. I went home and handed out his name to anyone and everyone I know that might ever need a periodontist. Over the last decade I have continued to see Dr. Samuel two or three times a year and each time without fail I am once again awed by the levels of excellence with each visit. Now, in the time of corona, I find myself hesitant to enter any doctor's office (With Dr. Samuel being the only exception) for any reason whatsoever! I never imagined that my experience at Dr. Samuel's office could get any better, but once again he exceeded my expectations! He and his team have gone above and beyond state mandates to ensure the health and safety of his patients and Staff! After self- isolating for 5 1/2 months and in need of medical attention for several different issues, the only doctor I felt comfortable seeing was Dr. Samuel. Aside from the obvious and common face masks and shields, Dr. Samuel's office is now equipped with hospital grade class B sterilizer autoclave, ultraviolet light fixtures, upgraded HVAC System to include Reme Halo whole office air purifier, and suction units to capture aerosols. I am fairly certain at this point that Dr. Samuel's office is now and always will be the safest place on the planet! And still painless!!! I am truly blessed to be under his care! Ever so grateful, Naomi L. Azar

Likewise, I found him to be a skilled listener, confident, and kind. Moreover, I was made to feel welcomed and comfortable by both Beth and Maureen. Dr Samuel's and his staff are very professional and caring in these difficult times. I am a senior and high-risk because of medical issues I felt very safe someone meets you at the front door with hand sanitizer takes your temperature and your oxygen level your asked questions about COVID-19 and while this is going on in the hall the room is being sanitized with ultraviolet light. Kathy the hygienist wears a mask face shield and gloves and has a device which is a vacuum on a flexible neck to suck any saliva that may come out of your mouth while she is cleaning. I feel safer in Dr Samuel's office then I do in Wegmans shopping.
