After graduation, Dr. Kim went on to complete his residency at the U.S. Air Force Residency Program at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. During his residency, he learned from specialists in prosthodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral surgery and other specialties, giving him a wide and comprehensive education in the various fields of dentistry. Following residency, Dr. Kim was stationed at Osan Air Base in Korea, then Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
In 1996, Dr. Kim opened his own private practice with his wife and office manager, Helen Kim. He passionately continues to study advanced methods of dentistry and dental treatments in order to provide the highest-quality services to his patients.
Outside of the office, Dr. Kim enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. The family shares a deep passion for soccer, and both of his daughters have played for local teams since they were 5 years old. Dr. Kim has also been a soccer coach for his daughters and the community, and continues to be active in the 50+ league. Their favorite pastimes are cheering for FC Barcelona, fishing, and hiking.

The best protection for your teeth during sports is a custom mouth guard. This can help to absorb the impact of a sports injury and greatly lessen the chances that you will have a tooth knocked out, fractured or chipped. It can also help prevent a jaw fracture or concussion if hit on the chin.
Boil-and-bite mouth guards. With this over-the-counter mouth guard, you place the pre-shaped mold into boiling water, which softens it, then bite into it to create a mold of your teeth. These mouth guards are often thick and bulky and do not stay put during wear.
Generic mouth guards. You can purchase a ready-to-wear, pre-shaped mouth guard. These types are a one-size-fits-all. But all mouths are different shapes and sizes. It would be difficult to find a generic mouth guard that provides security and comfort.

Dr. Kim and his excellent team are a model of skill, professionalism, and compassion. I can't recommend them enough. I have dealt with a fear of dentists my entire adult life which caused some issues I could no longer ignore beginning in December of '22. Dr. Kim and his team worked with me to mitigate my fears and are extremely understanding of my ongoing anxiety. With their care I have gone from needing anxiety medication and a ride to their office to the ability to drive myself to appointments. Procedures at Dr. Kim's office have benefitted me greatly - two crowns and several cleanings. They explain what they are doing and why, and take the time to be sure I'm comfortable while performing world class care.

I've been going to see Dr. Sonny Kim, Helen, and Maria since 2014 until I moved away to Florida in 2021. I highly recommend this office as they are serious about patient stewardship and providing high-quality care and meticulously done procedures. You'll be in great hands with this dental office!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Sonny Kim for over 20 years in Reston Virginia and I highly recommend him and his office. His office staff are always helpful and friendly, and Helen Kim works hard with insurance companies to negotiate down my out-of-pocket cost. Christy has been my dental hygienist for years and is always friendly and attentive. Over the years I've had multiple crowns and have seen the dedication Dr. Kim has to keeping up with the latest technology. My first crown was temporary, and now I can walk out the same day with a permanent crown. When I had an emergency and called after hours, Dr. Kim called me back within a half hour and got me first thing the next day. 10 years ago, when I experienced a panic attack during a procedure he and his staff helped me recover. I appreciate his dedication to his craft and his bedside manner has improved over the years, but I put that down to his focus on doing his job with complete dedication. I really appreciate the follow up calls after any procedure to see how I'm doing. I recently got a mouth guard and received a call from Helen the next day to see how my first night was. That is an experience I've never had with any other doctor's office. I highly recommend Dr. Kim and his office.

Dr Kim is the very best dentist I have ever gone to in my 50+ years of going to dentists. I love Him because he is one stop shopping, he does everything dental right in his office. He is painless...I never feel pain during or after my visits even though they are major...ie: Root canals, crowns, tooth pulled and bone graft. Etc! Also, his wife Helen is the office manager and is very kind and very efficient. His assistant is very helpful and thoughtful. I wish Icould give them five Hearts along with the 5 stars.

Dr. Sonny Kim is by far the best dentist I've ever had. I've had braces 3 times to close a gap between my front teeth but due to grinding, I broke my permanent retainer and the gap came back in another spot that was quite noticeable. I asked Dr.Kim what we could do to fix it without having veneers put on my front. 6 teeth. He made by HAND a mold to show me what it would look like if he just made each tooth a little bigger. I loved it immediately and booked an appointment to have it done permanently. My smile has changed for the better and I am absolutely in love with his work. No more getting my tongue caught in the gap or showing when I smile. The fact that he did this all by hand instead of sending it out shows how much he cares and how much he values his work. No other dentist could do what he did without it looking funny. I am super happy with the results and find myself smiling more than I use to. Oh, and did I mention that he got the colour perfect so you can't see where the bonding starts and ends on my teeth. Kudos to Dr. Kim for making my vision a reality. I started going to Dr. Sonny Kim at Advanced Family Dentistry in 2019 and was pleased right from the start. My first dental cleaning by the hygienist was the best experience I've ever had at a dentist's office. In early 2021, I needed a crown and for the dentist to repair a couple of old fillings. I was nervous and worrying about potential discomfort. I was amazed with the skill that Dr. Kim demonstrated. He is knowledgeable and excellent at what he does! He is also honest and reliable. He will tell you what needs to be done now and what can wait before performing any dental procedures. I highly recommend Dr. Kim for ALL dental needs. My husband and I wouldn't go anywhere else!

I have been seen by Dr. Kim since I was a child - about 17 years now! I tried some new dentists while I was away for school and quickly learned that I preferred Dr. Kim and his practice over any other dentists. I no longer live in the NOVA area but I still schedule my visits with Dr. Kim when I am home visiting family. I highly recommend!

MIRACLE DENTIST Dr. Kim My family and I have known Dr Kim as our family dentist for 15 years. I am now 79 years young and having root canals redone, tooth extraction and 7 new crowns. This has been a very technical and tedious procedure over several visits. Each one lasting atleast 3to 4 hours. Dr Kim has a surgical room with equipment that would rival a hospital operating room. The most impressive part of the practice is Dr Kim himself. He is overly qualified so can not be called just a dentist. He is and has always continued going back to school to qualify in all the latest procedures available.Dr Kim is the only dentist that I will trust to do all the work he is now doing for me. His staff is so caring and professional. You have no fears in his office because they are practicing every form of sanitizing. The office is over seen by a special lady called Helen that goes out of her way to walk you through scheduling, insurance and followup. What ever your dental needs, feel safe and secure in Dr Kim's hands. The best part of my on going procedure is the careand concern to my comfort and well-being. I highly recommend Dr Kim and his staff. All my friends that I recommended only have the highest praise for him. In this day and age Dr Kim is number one on my list.

I have never written a testimonial for a dentist. Dr. Kim is a very professional and a highly-skilled doctor. Going to the dentist can be intimidating. After consulting with him, I felt at ease allowing him to do the necessary work. I have had no complications. The office is very clean and they use the newest equipment. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend Dr. Kim for all your dentistry needs.

Dr. Kim has been our family dentist for last 12 years, He is very thorough and perfectionist , Recently I had a terrible tooth ache and I was under terrible pain but the office was closed indefinitely due to the Covid -19,, So I didn't know what to do . I just left a message explaining my pain. He called me back and prescribed an antibiotic to get my infection down .. I always regarded him as a one of the best dentist but didn't know his human side. He took a risk and did a procedure to extract two teeth . Appreciate your work.
