Regular eye exams are an essential part of keeping both babies, kids and teens on track for educational, social, and developmental success. Children with vision issues often have trouble in school, with sports, interacting with other children and day-to-day functioning. A vision check-up is a great way to keep your child on track for success.

Farsightedness, also known as Hyperopia, is another common condition where you can see objects that are far away better than objects up close. When a child has farsightedness the light rays in their eyes will focus behind the retinas surface instead of directly on it, making close-up objects blurry...more

Orthodontic Braces are a great solution to fixing the alignment of the jaw, adjusting the spacing of the teeth, and increasing your kids or teens confidence and self-esteem. The benefits of braces treatments have many positive side-effects for overall dental health as well, including:

Finding the right braces is the first step of the journey for creating a perfect smile. There are several types of braces commonly used today such as traditional metal braces, ceramic or porcelain braces, and removable aligners. Well help you find the best type for your child and teen based on your treatment plan, cost, and desired appearance.

  • Traditional Metal Braces are the most common type of braces, especially for children. Metal braces are highly effective and the most affordable type of orthodontic braces. Metal braces allow the orthodontist to easily and accurately complete monthly visits crafting a perfect smile. Plus, kids and teens have an awesome selection of elastic band colors to mix and match to achieve a look they love!
  • Ceramic or porcelain braces function just like metal braces, however the brackets are less noticeable and the wires are colored to blend in with your child or teens teeth. Clear braces are more expensive than metal braces and can discolor if not regularly cleaned. If you are looking for a less noticeable appearance these are a great option.
  • Removable aligners have become a popular choice in recent years. They are transparent trays that rest on top of the teeth that can be removed during meal times and other activities. Removable aligners are not able to correct significant bite problems and are not usually recommended for children due to the added cost and level of personal responsibility required during treatment. If you are looking for a less noticeable option to correct alignment issues, this may be the right treatment option for you.
  • No insurance, No problem: For adults and children without insurance coverage, we offer a number of affordable payment plans, our orthodontic coordinators can explain these options to determine a plan that works best for you.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening no later than age seven. By this age, it will be clear if a child has any jaw alignment problems, overcrowding, overbite or underbite, cross-bite, or additional orthodontic problems impacting a childs mouth. The earlier the orthodontic evaluation, the quicker we can determine if braces are required and what treatment plan is best.

Since Medicaid covers procedures that are medically necessary, orthodontic treatment is could be covered for children. If your child has an underbite, overbite, crossbite or severe crowding it might be time to consider braces for kids with Medicaid.

When a dentist that accepts Medicaid conducts an orthodontic evaluation on your child, they will determine a recommended treatment plan. As part of this, they assess whether Medicaid is likely to cover the orthodontic treatment or not. Medicaid knows that braces can be an important treatment to ensure lifelong oral health for kids. As a dentist that accepts Medicaid, we will manage the full Medicaid approval process which includes submitting the appropriate documents and patient records. Then, Medicaid examiners will look at what we submitted and determine if your childs recommended orthodontic treatment will be covered. Medicaid will notify you and our office if the treatment is approved or declined.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommend children receive their first orthodontic screening by the time they turn 7. At this age, major jaw and tooth alignment problems will be visible. As with any health intervention, the earlier a problem is identified, the easier it is to create a treatment plan and schedule. Some issues that are treated by braces include:

If your child needs orthodontic treatment, it will be an improvement that will last a lifetime. Braces fix more than crooked teeth to create a winning smile. In addition to straightening out your childs teeth, braces also correct bite and tooth alignment. This is important to:

There are other options for braces that are less noticeable than the metal brackets. Some of our older patients like that ceramic or porcelain braces blend in with their teeth. There are also clear braces, but these are more expensive than metal braces and can discolor if not cleaned regularly. Then, there are removable aligners such as Invisalign. These are transparent trays that can be removed during mealtimes. Removable aligners are popular with adults and older kids, but they arent appropriate to treat significant bite problems. We dont recommend removable aligners for most children because they require more responsibility to care for properly.

Sometimes, the orthodontist will recommend two phases of braces depending on the developmental stage of a childs teeth. The first phase might begin around age 7 to 10 years of age to correct issues with your childs primary teeth that could impact the arrival of permanent teeth. During this time, the jaw bones and palette are more pliable.

Around the age of 12, a second phase might be recommended. These braces straighten out the permanent teeth. The time your child will be in braces is dependent on their treatment plan and how well they follow the orthodontists instructions. It can range from 9 months to 30 months.

When your child has braces, it can be more difficult to brush and floss teeth properly, but its very important. Encourage your child with braces to rinse their mouths with water frequently. This helps wash away food particles and restore the pH levels in the mouth to neutral. Acidic foods can wear away tooth enamel.

When your child wears braces, we suggest they brush their teeth after every meal. Your child should pay special attention to their gum line and then focus on brushing above, below and on each bracket. Flossing daily is also critical especially when your child has braces.

No matter how many times you tell them your kids will not be back and to take them off the system they continue to call several times a month all the phone numbers they have on file.

Academy Kids has been wonderful. I am happy to take my kids here. Johnathan was great. They are all so informative and helpful. They took the time to explain things to my inquisitive child even though they were busy.

Their doctors admitting to messing up my daughters crowns. My daughter deals with regular mouth pain because of this and they say they can't do anything to fix it. I am extremely unsatisfied with their services. My other daughter has a pair of glasses that don't fit her face and they won't replace them. Have not been happy at all with the service and plan to move elsewhere.

I was so pleased to see the same optometrist from my son's first vision exam. He is autistic and nonverbal. She does an amazing job with him. The young lady that assisted was also really good with my son. Great visit.

Appointments have always been rushed here and I've never had a personable experience. At our last and final visit this week when the dentist came in, I was not greeted nor asked if I had any concerns (which should have been done by the tech, but she failed to do so, even though she claimed she did, as well as the scheduler who failed to make notes of my concerns when scheduling the apt). I was there because of my concerns for my sons teeth, and once I brought it up to the dentist, the tech was obviously very annoyed when she was asked to do additional x-rays. She also did not explain anything to my son before she would begin, so she kept having to redirect him and also seemed annoyed with my 8 y/o son, which in turn made me very upset. If you can't handle kids squirming a little because of your lack of preparing them for what's about to happen, or can't be bothered by taking the time to talk to parents and ask questions, don't waste your time working at a children's dentist office. There are many dentist offices in the Springs, and in hindsight I wish I would have chose another one to give so much of my business to.

Absolutely disgusted. AKD alone has cost me over $1k out of pocket to get my child's Amalgam fillings removed. There is a HUGE lack of communication between staff and patients. Most good dentists no longer use Amalgam fillings due to the FDA warnings. I was not told what they would be using on my child. Nor the dangers those fillings can potentially cause on my growing kid. I also got a 2nd opinion too late. Was told one of his fillings was unnecessary. I am livid. DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILD HERE!! EDIT: FDA states these fillings are HAZARDOUS for children under 6. Yet, AKD uses Amalgam on kids without even informing the parent.

It took 30 minutes for the receptionists to figure out my insurance coverage despite it working the week before. It turns out they misread my card. After waiting an additional 30+ minutes I discovered they never informed the back that we were there and checked in. They only realized their mistake when they were closing and wondered why we were still sitting in the lobby.

I took my kids here for 4 years. Vision is great. Dental however not so much. They kept using stuff that my kid was allergic too. They pulled a tooth without waiting for numbing. Now after switching dentists I find out most of the work they've done is falling out. If you have more than one kid they separate them so you can only be with one. The staff is nice most of the time

The dentist said my son has cavities that can't be seen on the x-ray. My son has no other fillings that would hide a cavity. That means the cavities are either too small or nonexistent. She then tried to sugjest a metal filling. I don't trust them to do what's best for my son. The hygienist was nice so 1 star.

Mediocre experience. Decently friendly, nice staff. Had an appointment at a certain time & was made to wait more than 45 minutes to even be called back. Why schedule me at a specific time if it's going to be an hour later before my child is called back?

I do not recommend this south location of Academy Kids Dental because every single time my kids has appointment they make us to wait over an hour to see dentist , even though my kids get there 15 min before their appointments but still the stuffs is very disrespectful and our time always wasted.there . so don't go to Academy Kids Dental for treatments.
