February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Dr. Patel was very informative, and explained things to me about the development of my child's teeth that no other dentist has EVER taken the time to tell me... I didn't give them a 5 star simply because they didn't have their office door labeled suite 101 and Abbeyville wasn't on their door also. I had to go upstairs to ask where 101 was. Dr. Patel and April certainly know their craft.

The front desk receptionist was very kind and helpful. Orthodontist and dental assistant were also kind and communicative. Overall, this was a great first experience here--and I am NOT a regular dentist goer. Would recommend!

The staff and Dr's. Here are awesome and are always very nice and calm my daughter and explain clearly what is needed. They are also very efficient and quick to keep my daughter from stressing so much. Love them

Was very nervous And had anxiety anxiety at the beginning but thanks to Bree And how wonderful the staff was I felt very comfortable And was able to relax. Bree was very friendly and helpful. You don't find many employees like her anymore whatever they are paying it isn't enough! The dentist was very sharp and extremely knowledgeable and provided me with great help. 1st time in 10 years I actually look forward to going back to the dentist and relieved that i would be taken care of.

Have nothing but praise to say about Special Needs Dentistry...all employees were courteous and polite. . especially the office manager, Bianca M, she showed her professionalism and knowledge to the utmost degree. I will definitely recommend this practice to everyone who wants professional service

These people are slow as molasses. What should have taken an hour to get done it took three and half hours which I did not have the time to do. I sat around most of the time as the staff was working with me and another patient with one dentist. I was told my appointment was going to be an hour which would work with my schedule, but it took 3 1/2 hours. This would be unsat if a person took off work for an hour for an appointment but had to call to call in because they took 3 hours. Some places do not like their staff to be gone that long. They seem like they didn't care that my time was valuable. I wasn't even exam till after an hour. I would not recommend this place to anyone

Update: This place is still awesome. All the workers have so much patience for children and work so well with them. Highly recommend. April L was excellent today. Dr Patel is wonderful with my son. Highly recommend for anyone that is special needs or has children that are special needs.

Staff from front office all the way up to Dr. Reddell are pretty awesome with my kiddos. ASD, severe anxiety, trauma from previous dental experiences... all handled as if my kids were model patients. (They are not. Lol) So, yes, I will make a 160 mile round trip so that my kids can receive care at this clinic.
