February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

The dental assistant asked if I had any questions and continually cut me off mid sentence. I was answering one of her questions and another assistant or secretary (I was sitting with my back turned), and the dental assistant asked her what she needing in the middle of a question that I was asking. Rude and unprofessional. The dentist was nice and professional though. Way expensive also.

Overall my experience is overwhelmingly positive. But waiting for weeks to get an appointment, then two days before that appointment being told I had to reschedule, and being rescheduled three and a half more weeks out is not okay. It's just a cleaning. If they are this backed up then they shouldn't have taken my appointment in the first place. Or should have referred me to another location...

UPDATE: I finally got in for an appointment (got hung up on again) and when I showed up they told me I'd been scheduled with the wrong person. They said they'd try to fit me in but I waited for 45min and just ended up leaving. DO NOT schedule anything with them over the phone- that's their outsourced scheduling service. Go to the office in person- the receptionists are the only ones who know what they're doing. I just received the worst treatment on the phone by their scheduling service. I asked the person to give my appointment time to my husband and schedule me a new appointment. The person changed my appointment time and let someone take my previous time slot! The whole point was to give my husband that time because he's travelling that month. So they effectively canceled my appointment for no reason!! I asked them to please fix their mistake, they told me they would transfer me to someone who could help and they hung up on me!! Totally unacceptable.

DO NOT TRUST THEM. I moved here for tech and needed a new dentist. You need to make an initial visit before getting to have your teeth cleaned (but after calling a few places around here apparently that's normal, just strange to me that it took a month to get two separate appointments in so that I could get my teeth cleaned). After my cleaning, I was told I have 4 cavities and would need all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled due to that fact that the fillings I have on them are decaying. My wisdom teeth have been grown in perfectly and I have been specifically told in the past not to get them removed due to their perfect location. Now I get cavities here and there but was very alarmed and surprised by this news because I've never had 4 over the course of only 6 months. I'm glad I got a second opinion at my dentist in Chicago a few months later. Turns out I had ONE cavity. I don't even have fillings on all of my wisdom teeth, but the ones I do he said are fine. He said my wisdom teeth have more grooves than normal, which make them more cavity-prone, but that my wisdom teeth certainly didn't need to be removed. He said if I WANT them removed and have insurance to cover it, I can if I want to, but its not necessary at all like this place told me. Long story short, they told me that a ton of things were wrong with me teeth when in reality I had just one very small cavity and that's it. I don't know if they do this to people all the time just to get their money, or if the person looking at my teeth just had absolutely no clue what they were doing?? Either way, I wouldn't go here!! Who knows if they even cleaned my teeth well.

They are a GREAT dentistry for kiddos, however there is always ALOT of people there and I always seem to be waiting longer each time. Idk other than the random pointless waiting (that's why we set appointments) it's a great place!
