February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I have to say Abbeville Dentistry has the best staff in the world. Everyone is so kind and caring. Got full dentures in Aug '22 and have been back again and again because the Doctors really care about you. Dr. Tiner is so kind and the best dentist I have seen. Great chair side manner and is honest about your needs I cannot say enough good things about him. I was so afraid of dentures at 53, but my experience has been great. I look forward to having all my future care done at Abbeville.

Hygienist and office staff are great. However, the financial component is subpar. I always have the same services (cleaning) and yet have never paid the same amount for the visits. Each visit I am charged substantially more than the previous and noone has been able to explain the discrepancies and why I always seem to owe more than the prior visit for exact same services.

Upon my entry the girls at the front were very nice and helpful. When I was called back the girls always explain what the appointment is about and what will be done before anything starts with the dentist and they are always very sweet and seem to genuinely care. So far I have had zero issues with this place and will continue to come here. It is nice to go to a place of business whre they make you feel loke a small part of the family..

Appt was fir 4pm I got there at 345 didn't get called back til 430. Asian dr wanting to look in my mouth before e I even got seated she didn't stick around for any questions. Hygienist soaked me & I had to go to work not cool.
