February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Called with an emergency and was seen the same day, and problem resolved the morning of the next day. The staff is accommodating and all very kind, and they answered every question I had with thoughtful and knowledgeable responses. I get very nervous when it comes to dental work, but the staff here made me feel completely safe and comfortable! Great service and great staff.

My daughter had an appointment on September 8th and her Dr was David Wilkins. She had a filling done and some sealants. While he was working on her she kept holding her hand up for him to stop he said "it's too late to stop now we gotta keep moving" so she flew up out of her chair cuz she was choking on a cotton ball! He threw his hands up and left us in the room and went to another patient like nothing happen he didn't even ask how she was doing! He's so rude and disrespectful. He left us in the room for another 45min we had already waited 30 min before we got in. He came back and I told him she was choking on a gauze and he said " it was a cotton ball" with no remorse no sympathy. I recommend not anyone go see Dr Wilkins I wouldn't trust him with anything.

Good staff and nice people. Went there for a full exam, was quick, seen quick, not a long wait, and nice people that help you understand what you need with options.

Dr. Kharrat is amazing! She listens carefully to what you say, is making sure that you understand what she recommends and is always willing to answer questions. She is super accommodating and respectful of my needs and concerns. I would not say that I enjoy having dental procedures but I am always reassured and grateful to know that Dr. Kharrat will be my dentist if I need them. Abbeville Dentistry front desk personnel is also very serious and helpful.
