February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I called last week to make my appointment today at 9am. They also gave me a reminder call yesterday confirming the appointment. I come in at 9am and they said my appointment wasn't until 4pm. They were able to fit me in 30mins. I sit in the chair for about an hour waiting for to see the doctor. He was very nice! They said ok go to the front to see if they can fit me in for a cleaning. Then they said they don't have time to do my cleaning. So I waisted half my day when I could've of been working. I used PTO hours to be able to do my appointment. Will not be returning, I'll look for another dentist, because I am not about to take a day off of work to get a cleaning when they mixed up the items as well as not even do the Cleaning.

Staff was kind and courteous. Appointment time was met within reason, and they fixed what prior dentists wouldn't take the time to fix! Will definitely be back! Thank you!

Kind and courteous employees! Everything was ready ... paperwork, patient room and supplies. I was able to go and and out for a regular cleaning. But this is the way it is every time. Thank you for making my visits a positive one!

The staff has always been so friendly and welcoming. One day I witnessed the front desk staff have a challenging patient and they remained kind and courteous the entire time. Happy to give them 5 stars.

Doctor U and staff are nice. BUT I have never waited as long as I have to see a dentist when in pain! We are talking several weeks! They have several offices in town but they do not communicate with each other. They also have several dentists and say you can see anyone of them but I did not find that to be true in my case the first few times.

Terrible experience. Was quoted just under $4,000 for entire procedure start to finish. Insurance paid. I paid Cash in full. Had all my remaining teeth removed. Received Temp dentures that no matter how many adjustments were done DO NOT FIT! Start impressions for perms and was told I couldn't have my permanent set of teeth till my balance was paid. So I ask what's the balance thinking it's a few hundred. My so called remaining balance is $2,000. So a year later I'm still here with no teeth!! Cant eat much, dont smile much now. Thanks to Abbeville!! Would not recommend to anyone!!

I absolutely love Abbyville on Grand and I-40 they have the up most nice humans I have met. The girls are always smiling and singing and I get a hoot out of Dr Jennings. He's very kind, and my anxiety is barley there every time I'm there even for my extractions. I'll never go anywhere else! Thank y'all!
