February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Abbeville Dentistry on I40/Washington has to be the best dentist office I have been to. The Dr., he is awesome!! And those ladies working the office; shout out to them for being courteous, understanding, and patient. Well except one. Lol No, everyone is great. I encourage anyone to visit you will be pleasantly surprised. Dental work is quick but done correctly to where you feel comfortable and get your money worth!

This experience was amazing!! Office is very nice, not sterile or imposing but quite comfortable! Staff were all very accommodating and friendly yet so very informed and very professional!! I am delighted with the folks I met. The dentist was great!! I feel very encouraged! I was listened to and everyone understood my concerns which were responded to in the moment with real concern. They are so expert!! I have considerable work that won't be easy but I left feeling assured this is the place that can do it!!

I came here to get my wisdom teeth removed and the staff was nice. My problem was that several months after my visit, I tried to schedule a cleaning and was told I owed money to collections and would not be seen until it was paid. I was never informed of a due balance at either 2 followup appointments after my procedure. I'm always very responsible with my finances and tried to resolve it but it turned into a big hassle. I just decided to change my dental provider.

I really enjoy coming to this location. I have always hated going to the dentist but everyone including the front desk to the Dentist and dental hygienist always treat me with such patience and are just over very generous people. If you are searching for a great dental office this is the place!

After falling and breaking a tooth, they were able to see me the very next morning. Everyone there is so friendly! Roe really put me at ease. Up front, Sylvia was helpful and knowledgeable. For once I'm not dreading future dental work! I'm very glad I found Abbeville on Washington.

Did a good job with the visit as they were friendly and quick. Major concern was I wanted a cleaning and they did not tell me until after the exam that I would have to schedule another visit for a cleaning. Had I known that I would have chosen another dentist. I used this location in the past and had no issues. My wife used another dentist that saw her and did cleaning same day. I should have went there instead. It would have been less frustrating had they told me when I setup the appointment that they would not do the cleaning. Most dentist can do X-rays and cleaning same visit. I have no issues with my teeth so having to make two trips for a cleaning is unnecessary.
