Gilberto Tostados father and grandfather were both dentists. From his early childhood, he remembers going to their dental offices where they had carving wax in their laboratories. He would build cars and planes out of the wax. By the time he was 12, he was doing dental laboratory workmaking teeth out of wax and making dental models. He loved this hands-on work and decided to make it his career, also.
Born and raised in Arizona, after high school he moved to Monterrey, Mexico where he obtained a Masters in Restorative Dentistry. Later he attended the University of Southern California where he completed a 3-year residency in prosthodontics, earning his specialty certificate. He has been in private practice in San Antonio since 2015.
In his treatment philosophy, he emphasizes prevention and conservative treatment. His hygienist is a key part of his treatment team and she takes a lead role in helping patients prevent dental disease. When treatment is needed, he wants it to be as minimally invasive as possible. Fortunately, dental implants and dental bonding now allow much more conservative treatments than used to be possible.
He loves the artistic aspect of his work. When asked what he finds particularly satisfying about his work, he responded, Being able to design a smile and create function like an artist would design his masterpiece and an architect would pour his heart into his design. He loves seeing his patients quality of life transformed by improved aesthetics and function.
The field of prosthodontics gives me the opportunity to take on challenging cases and see the treatment through from beginning to end. I get to watch first-hand as the improved aesthetics and function transform my patients quality of life. I love being able to share in that experience with them.
Dr. Tostado never stops learning and sharing what hes learned with others. He logs more than 100 hours each year in continuing education, over eight times the amount required by the state of Texas. He has also lectured for dental conferences across the United States and in Mexico, and has published dental articles including CAD/CAM High-Strength Glass-Ceramics in Quintessence of Dental Technology. He has also published a research thesis, Dental Erosion in Bulimic Patients.
Dr. Tostado leads an active and busy life outside of 5 Star Dental Group. He enjoys motorsports racing, traveling, and equestrian arts. He and his wife Karina, a health coach and fellow dentist, share a love for road trips, nature hikes, and English bulldogs.
Dr. Craig Carlson grew up in San Antonio, TX, and attended Trinity University before completing his dental training at the University of Texas in Houston. Although Dr. Carlson has been practicing dentistry in San Antonio, TX, for more than 40 years, he is constantly attending continuing education courses to stay on the cutting edge of whats new. He feels that he cannot burn out if he is still learning and growing. His passion is doing beautiful cosmetic dentistry because it can truly change lives.
Dr. Carlson has been published in several prestigious journals in the dental field, and he has lectured in several seminars and worked as an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry. In addition, he has worked as a consultant and has been part of several professional organizations, as well as working with civic organizations.
Dr. Carlson volunteers with multiple local organizations, including the Boys Club of San Antonio, Eloise Japhet School, Wesley Community Center, and more. He has been recognized as a Super Dentist in the field of cosmetic dentistry by Texas Monthly Magazine.

Mary Jo was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Texas Tech University. She met her husband at Tech and they got married the summer before their senior year. They raised two children who are both now married and have kids of their own.
Vicki is a veteran dental hygienist with more than 40 years of experience and a passion for helping people love their smiles. Her goal is to make every one of her patients feel like family. Even though Vicki has been practicing dental hygiene for decades, she never passes up an opportunity to learn something new so that she can continue to provide the highest level of care to her patients.
Vicki graduated from Bee County College in Beeville, Texas with an associates degree in 1980. Soon after she started practicing dental hygiene, Vicki also started raising a family. Vicki and her husband John have two sons who have both graduated with bachelors degrees. They still live close by here in San Antonio.
Karen has more than 30 years of experience in the dental industry and has been a dental hygienist on our team since 2010. Karen loves to explore new technologies and techniques in dental hygiene so that she can continue to offer her patients the best experience possible.
Rosalinda, or Rosie, is a San Antonio native. Shes busy both inside and outside the office. When shes not assisting Dr. Tostado, Rosie is on-the-go helping her eleven-year-old daughter get around to volleyball practice and other middle school activities. She also loves spending time outdoors with her daughter, especially playing soccer. Rosie has a five-year-old English Bulldog named Brutus who isnt quite so active. . . his favorite activities are eating and sleeping!

When Dr. Tostado is not in the dental office, his hobbies include all forms of motorsports racing, the equestrian arts, and spending time with family. He is an optimistic person that enjoys social interaction and embracing new cultures through his travels.
