  • Oral Cancer Screenings

    Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer occurs when cancerous cells grow in the mouth. Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, but it’s most commonly found in the tongue, the floor of the mouth, the gums, the roof of the mouth, and the side and bottom of the mouth. The most common causes of oral cancer include: 1. Smoking or chewing tobacco 2. Alcohol consumption 3. HPV infection 4. Poor oral hygiene To lower your risk of oral cancer, avoid alcohol consumption and tobacco use. You should also schedule an appointment with our dentist regularly for dental checkups. HOW AND WHY ORAL CANCER DEVELOPS The mouth is lined with many different types of cells, and all of them require oxygen to survive. When oral cancer develops, it’s because the cells aren’t getting the oxygen they need. When oral cancer forms, the cells in the mouth grow and divide too quickly, which can result in tumors. Since oral cancer is one of the only types that can develop inside the mouth, it’s incredibly important that patients practice regular oral cancer screenings. Having certain risk factors doesn’t mean you’ll develop oral cancer. However, it does mean that you should be screened regularly. When your dentist screens you for oral cancer, he or she will thoroughly examine your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums. This exam also may include an oral cancer screening light, which can help your dentist spot abnormal tissue in your mouth. ORAL CANCER SCREENING METHODS At your dental checkups, we will perform an oral cancer screening. This involves visually examining the soft tissues of the mouth, lips, and gums, as well as feeling for any lumps or irregular tissue. If we find an area of concern, we may refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. This screening can help your dentist spot cancers early when they’re easier to treat. It may include: - Oral cancer screening using VELscope technology - Oral cancer screening using Vizilite technology With oral cancer, the early stages of the disease don’t often cause pain. In fact, many patients may not notice any symptoms at all. This makes it even more important to get screened regularly. ORAL CANCER TREATMENT Diagnosing oral cancer in its earliest stages increases a patient’s survival rate, especially when cancer hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes.  When caught early, oral cancer is highly curable. The five-year survival rate of oral cancer is around 85 percent. When diagnosed in later stages, the survival rate drops to about 50 percent. The stage the cancer is at at the time of diagnosis often determines the prognosis. The stages of oral cancer are as follows: Stage 1 - cancer is localized to the mouth. Stage 2 - cancer has spread to the lymph nodes of the neck. Stage 3 - cancer has spread to the lymph nodes behind the jaw. Stage 4 - cancer has spread to other parts of the body. • Night Guards

    Night Guards

A night guard is an oral appliance that you wear while you sleep. It fits over your teeth like a retainer and prevents your teeth from grinding together. There are many different types of night guards, but the most popular types are those made of hard acrylic. These guards are custom-made to fit your teeth perfectly. A night guard can help: * Prevent you from grinding your teeth. * Relieve jaw pain and help you to get a better night’s sleep. DO NIGHT GUARDS WORK? Night guards work to relieve pressure caused by clenching or grinding. If left untreated, this can not only damage your teeth but can cause TMJ issues as well. In fact, one of the major causes of TMJ is grinding your teeth. Grinding can cause headaches, jaw pain, and lockjaw. Night guards can help alleviate these symptoms, as well as prevent further damage to your teeth. BENEFITS OF A NIGHT GUARD In addition to protecting your beautiful smile, a custom night guard may also help you avoid serious health risks such as teeth grinding. If you are grinding your teeth, you are putting yourself at risk for damage that can potentially lead to needing restorative or reconstructive dental treatment in the future. Grinding your teeth can put excess pressure on your teeth and jaws, causing headaches, jaw pain, and damage to the teeth themselves. If you think you grind your teeth at night or have noticed a difference in the way your teeth fit together, we welcome you to call us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lindbeck! TYPES OF NIGHT GUARDS The most common types of night guards are: 1) Soft: These guards are made of soft plastic and are very comfortable to wear. 2) Hard: These guards are made of hard plastic and are more rigid but are still typically comfortable to wear. HOW IS A NIGHT GUARD MADE? A night guard is made to fit snugly over your teeth. They are made from a hard, clear material. You will typically wear this appliance every night while you sleep. The guard is personalized for your mouth. Impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to the dental lab, where a custom mold will be made. The dentist will fit the night guard over your teeth and check the fit. Once the fit is correct, the guard will be provided to you. In case of any change in fit required, we will have them altered and provide you with a perfectly fitting night guard. • Ultrasonic Cleaning

    Ultrasonic Cleaning

Scaling is oral cleaning that removes plaque and tartar buildup on the surface of the teeth. When plaque is not properly removed from the teeth, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning. Scaling is often the first step in dental cleaning, and it is often followed with a polish. BENEFITS OF ULTRASONIC SCALING Ultrasonic scalers are able to reach areas that traditional hand scaling cannot. These areas include underneath the gum line, along the root surface, and around and below the gum line. Ultrasonic scalers are also better at removing stubborn deposits such as calculus and tartar. Ultrasonic scalers also make for a more comfortable dental experience. Traditional hand scaling tools can cause sensitivity in the gums, while ultrasonic scalers do not. IS ULTRASONIC SCALING RIGHT FOR YOU? Ultrasonic scaling is a cleaning method that uses a tool called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Scaling is most effective when plaque and tartar are soft. Generally, this is after a routine cleaning. Scaling isn’t meant as a replacement for a dental cleaning but rather as a supplement to your routine care. Ultrasonic scalers are highly effective in removing plaque and calculus from teeth. Many patients prefer this type of scaling because they say that they feel little to no discomfort. These scalers do not have sharp, metal tips that can chip or irritate the gums. Instead, they use high-frequency vibrations to blast away plaque and calculus. ULTRASONIC SCALING PROCEDURE Ultrasonic scaling uses waves of pressure and water to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth and below the gum line. The dentist or hygienist will insert a tool with a tip that vibrates at high speed. The tool will remove the tartar and bacteria, leaving you with a bright smile. During the scaling procedure, the ultrasonic tool will vibrate and emit a high-pitched sound. This sound is harmless but may be unpleasant to some patients. The scaling tool comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing it to be used on almost any patient. Ultrasonic scaling is often combined with hand scaling tools for a combined cleaning method. • Digital X-Rays

    Digital X-Rays

An intraoral x-ray is a panoramic x-ray that focuses on the inside of a patient’s mouth. This type of x-ray is used to detect tooth decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. But an intraoral x-ray is different from other dental x-rays because it uses sensors to expose only one side of a patient’s mouth at a time. SAFETY WITH DIGITAL X-RAYS Digital x-rays, or digital radiographs, use a digital image of your mouth instead of film. This image is viewed on a screen and can be enhanced, modified, and manipulated for a clearer image than an x-ray on film. This also means that digital x-rays can be quickly sent and viewed by other dentists. Digital x-rays require only a small amount of radiation exposure, making it safer for patients who are concerned about radiation exposure. DIGITAL X-RAY TECHNOLOGY EXPLAINED The x-ray images produced with digital x-ray technology are more detailed than those produced with film-based x-ray technology. Digital x-rays are also safer for our patients because we don’t have to use harsh chemicals to develop the film as we did in the past. Digital x-rays are also faster, more comfortable, and more convenient for our patients. Digital x-rays are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools we have. They’re fast and give us accurate, detailed, and absolutely safe images. DIGITAL X-RAYS AND DENTAL TREATMENTS With digital x-rays, we can take an image with a very small dose of radiation, instantly view it, and send it along to our dental team. This allows our team to see potential problems with your teeth sooner and plan any necessary treatment. Digital x-rays are more comfortable because they are taken using sensors rather than traditional film. They also emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional dental x-rays. We use digital x-rays to determine the size and extent of cavities, hidden dormant cavities, cracked and fractured teeth, root canal infection, etc. In children, we may also use them to check the loss of baby teeth and the eruption of permanent teeth, check for malocclusion, etc. They are also predominantly used to check for damaged teeth or jawbones in case of severe trauma to the face or jaws. Dental x-rays are a vital tool in diagnosing dental conditions, including gum disease and oral cancer. • Dental Technology

    Dental Technology

Dental technology includes all of the tools, equipment, and techniques used by dentists and dental assistants. These tools help dentists, and dental assistants complete their daily tasks efficiently. Common dental technologies include dental X-rays, dental lasers, intraoral cameras, CEREC restorations, and impression scanners. DENTAL X-RAYS Your dentist may need to take dental x-rays before providing certain treatments. For example, we may need to take x-rays if your tooth is impacted or if there is another type of dental obstruction present. Even if your teeth look perfectly aligned, there may be invisible issues going on under the surface that only an x-ray can reveal. 3D SCANNING With 3D scanning, your dentist can quickly and efficiently scan your mouth to create a model of your teeth. This digital impression can be used to produce clear aligners, crowns, and more. 3D scanning is more comfortable than traditional impressions. The digital impression is taken using a small hand-held wand. This wand is inserted in your mouth, and your dentist uses the computer to collect impressions of your teeth. CEREC RESTORATIONS CAD/CAM software allows digital impressions to be designed for prosthetics. This technology can be used for a variety of restorations, including dental crowns, dental bridges, and porcelain veneers. The technology used in this case is CEREC. The digital impression system captures images of the patient’s teeth and gums. These images are then uploaded to a software program. The dentist can then design a restoration that suits the patient’s needs. The software also enables the dentist to preview the restoration. ULTRASONIC SCALING Ultrasonic scaling is the process of using a hand-held scaling appliance that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies and dislodges tartar deposits. It is widely used to remove bacterial deposits from the teeth and prevent the onset of cavities. This dental innovation has replaced the conventional hand-held scaler. • Teeth Whitening Treatment

    Teeth Whitening Treatment

Teeth whitening is a treatment that removes stains and discolorations from teeth. Many patients opt for teeth whitening as a way to rejuvenate their smile. Although teeth whitening treatment can lighten the color of your teeth, it’s not designed to remove or reduce tooth imperfections or correct alignment issues. Only cosmetic dentistry treatments can address those concerns. TEETH WHITENING TOOTHPASTE Many whitening toothpastes use abrasives to remove surface stains. However, these products are not as effective as professional teeth whitening. This is because abrasives only remove stains on the surface of teeth. Brushing too hard can cause tooth sensitivity. It can also remove enamel from teeth, which can lead to tooth decay. OVER-THE-COUNTER TEETH WHITENING PRODUCTS There are many over-the-counter teeth whitening products available. But one thing that most of these products have in common is their ineffectiveness. Some products do contain bleaching agents, but the concentration of these agents is very low. This means that although you may begin to see some results, the results will usually not be long-lasting. AT-HOME TEETH WHITENING There are a variety of at-home teeth whitening kits available. These typically contain an at-home whitening agent and a mold or tray that fits over your teeth. The whitening agent breaks down stains on the enamel surface. We will provide you with a custom-fabricated whitening tray and a whitening gel that you can use at home. To find out more about the dental services offered at our dental practice by Dr. Lindbeck, call (760)-747-3988 or schedule an online consultation. • Dental Veneers

    Dental Veneers

A veneer is a thin shell of tooth-colored porcelain that is bonded to the front of a tooth. Dental veneers are custom-made to match the size, shape, color, and translucency of surrounding teeth. Veneers can be used to improve the appearance of: * Discolored teeth * Misaligned teeth * Chipped teeth * Worn-down teeth * Excessively spaced teeth WHY CHOOSE DENTAL VENEERS? Dental veneers are thin, durable shells that are permanently bonded to the front of your teeth. They are made from either porcelain or resin composite and are designed to completely cover the surface of your teeth. They are custom-made for each patient and can address cosmetic flaws in your smile. Dental veneers are a popular choice because they provide a permanent solution to cosmetic issues. Veneers offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color and shape compared to crowns. Veneers are also a more cost-effective way to treat teeth that are severely discolored, chipped, have small or uneven spaces, or have shifted since their original development. The cost of veneers depends on how many teeth you are covering. If you only need veneers on a few teeth, the cost will be much less than if you need veneers on all of your teeth. ARE DENTAL VENEERS PERMANENT? The short answer is no. However, most patients feel that the benefits of dental veneers outweigh the minimal maintenance they require. Porcelain veneers are as permanent as dental crowns. They are bonded to your teeth, which makes them more stable than cosmetic bonding. But, they will need to be replaced at some point. Veneers can last a decade or longer with proper care, which is much longer than other cosmetic treatments. They have one of the highest success rates of all cosmetic treatments. ARE DENTAL VENEERS A GOOD OPTION FOR ME? The best way to determine if dental veneers are right for you is to meet with our dentist in person. While dental veneers are a viable option for many people, they may not be the right choice for you. For example, if you have teeth that are significantly misaligned, veneers may not provide a permanent fix. Veneers can typically be completed in one office visit, making them a quick and convenient cosmetic dental treatment. • Dental Bonding

    Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses a composite material to repair small cosmetic dental issues. The bonding material can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth, making it look very natural. It’s ideal for repairing minor cracks and chips in the teeth and gaps in between the teeth. The bonding material can also be used to fill cavities in addition to being used as an aesthetic dental enhancement. ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL BONDING Dental bonding is an affordable cosmetic option that can fix many dental issues. Here’s how it can benefit your smile: * It’s more affordable compared to dental veneers.  * It’s less time-consuming to complete. Dental bonding can be completed in just one visit. * It can fix a wide range of dental issues. Dental bonding can fix chips, cracks, gaps, and discolorations.  IS DENTAL BONDING RIGHT FOR ME? Dental bonding is a cosmetic solution used to address dental imperfections. If your teeth are stained, chipped, or damaged, dental bonding can help. Dental bonding can also be used to close gaps between teeth. Dental bonding can address several types of common dental imperfections. To determine if dental bonding is right for you, call your cosmetic dental expert for an evaluation. WHAT HAPPENS DURING DENTAL BONDING? First, we’ll clean your teeth. Then, we’ll roughen the surface of your tooth with a mild etching solution. This allows the composite resin to bond to your tooth. Then, we apply an adhesive and resin to your tooth. The resin is molded and smoothed so that it matches your tooth’s shape. We harden it with a curing light. Then, we polish it, so it feels comfortable and matches your tooth color. DENTAL BONDING AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS Dental bonding is one of the simplest and most affordable cosmetic dental treatments. Here are your aftercare instructions to ensure the restoration lasts for a long time: 1. Be careful when eating. 2. Do not chew ice or use your teeth as tools. 3. Do not bite your nails or chew on pens, pencils, or foreign objects. 4. Protect your smile against the damage of tobacco use. • Restorative Dentistry

    Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with the fabrication of dental restorations. In most cases, such restorations are used to bring the teeth back to their ideal condition in terms of color, size, texture, contour, and structural strength. DENTAL FILLING The dental filling procedure is usually completed in one dental appointment. The first step of the process is to prepare the tooth for filling by removing any decay. Then, the tooth is cleaned, prepared, and filled with dental filling material. The tooth is then shaped to blend in with the other teeth, and the bite is checked to make sure it feels balanced and comfortable. DENTAL CROWN For patients with tooth decay or a large cavity, dental crowns may be recommended. Dental crowns are a restorative dental procedure used to strengthen and repair teeth that are damaged or decayed. They are made of porcelain and fit completely over the top of each tooth, providing a natural look and functioning like a normal tooth. Dental crowns are durable, providing long-lasting protection and strength. They can help patients avoid tooth extractions since a dental crown can repair teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted. DENTAL BRIDGE A dental bridge is a type of fixed dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge is secured by crowns on either side of the gap, and it fills in the gap with a false tooth. A bridge is non-removable. DENTAL IMPLANT Dental implants are a permanent option for replacing missing teeth. Patients can brush and floss normally and easily keep their mouths healthy. This means that patients won’t have to worry about cavities developing in their natural teeth, as the implant crown can essentially take the place of your missing tooth. Dental implants can be restored with single crowns, bridges, and dentures. DENTURES Teeth naturally start to deteriorate in adulthood. At our dental practice, we offer partial and full dentures as restorative dentistry solutions for missing teeth. We understand that tooth loss can lead to embarrassment, but they don’t have to be. Partial dentures are removable dental appliances that replace multiple missing teeth. They are held in place by clasps that attach to your remaining teeth. We design them to fit your smile perfectly for a natural-looking result. Full dentures are for people who have lost all of their teeth. They are held in place by suction and denture adhesives. Our dental team helps you determine which type of denture will best meet your restorative dentistry needs. • Sedation Dentistry

    Sedation Dentistry

There are many people who suffer from dental phobia. For these people, the idea of going to the dentist and undergoing necessary treatments can be so stressful that they avoid going to the dentist altogether. Sedation dentistry allows people to get the dental care they need without having to deal with the stress of getting dental work done. If you suffer from dental phobia, talk to our dentist about the sedation options they offer. This way, you can get the necessary dental work done, and you won’t have to worry about being anxious or nervous throughout the appointment. IS SEDATION DENTISTRY SAFE? We believe that sedation dentistry is safe and safer than being awake while receiving dental treatments. If you choose sedation, you are still able to answer questions and communicate with our dentist. Some patients with severe dental anxiety find it very difficult to even sit in the dental chair without panicking. If you have avoided the dentist for years due to your anxiety, sedation dentistry may be exactly what you need to finally get the dental care you need. IS SEDATION DENTISTRY A GOOD OPTION FOR ME? Some patients only experience dental anxiety when they are sitting in a dental chair. However, many others experience some anxiety at the thought of going to the dentist. If you fall into the latter category, you may want to ask your dentist about sedation dentistry options. Depending on the type of sedation dentistry you receive, you may need pre-sedation instructions to prepare your body ahead of time. For example, one type of sedation dentistry, oral sedation, requires you to avoid eating or drinking before your procedure. Your dentist may also provide other instructions. WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SEDATION DENTISTRY? There are many different types of sedation dentistry. The type of sedation you need will depend on your level of anxiety, your overall health, and the procedure you’re undergoing. The most popular types of sedation include: * Nitrous oxide sedation: This is the most common type of sedation dentistry. It’s safe for children and people with certain health conditions. It’s also reversible, which means you’ll be able to drive yourself home from the dentist. * Oral sedation: If nitrous oxide isn’t enough, your dentist may also prescribe oral sedation. This is administered as pills or liquids. To find out more about the dental services offered at our dental practice by Dr. Lindbeck, call (760)-747-3988 or schedule an online consultation. • Cosmetic Dentistry

    Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a number of procedures that improve the overall appearance of your smile. This includes procedures like teeth whitening, inlays/onlays, and dental bonding. Cosmetic dentistry also includes procedures like dental implants and bridges, which replace missing teeth and help restore your smile’s function. PORCELAIN VENEERS Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the frontal surfaces of your teeth. They are used to correct a wide range of dental concerns, including: * Misaligned teeth * Chipped or cracked teeth * Discolored teeth * Gaps between teeth * Teeth that are too small * Teeth that are too large * Misshapen teeth * Unevenly spaced teeth Porcelain veneers are custom-made for your mouth and smile. They are highly durable, stain-resistant, and reflect light naturally, making them a great option for enhancing your smile. They fit over your natural teeth and are created out of thin but durable porcelain material. The veneers are bonded directly to your teeth and are a pain-free, non-invasive option for improving your smile. DENTAL IMPLANTS Dental implants are an excellent option for one or more missing teeth. These titanium posts take the place of your natural tooth roots. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, or they can be used to replace multiple teeth in a row. Dental implants can also be used to support a full set of dentures. Your dentures snap onto the implants, providing a secure, stable hold. This option provides more security than dentures alone. TEETH WHITENING Teeth whitening is extremely popular, as Dr. Lindbeck offers in-office and take-home treatments. Teeth whitening can improve the appearance of your smile, making it easier to feel confident in social situations. If you have sensitive teeth, our dentist may recommend a take-home whitening treatment. The home whitening treatment involves a whitening gel, which is applied to your teeth using custom mouth trays. The mouth trays are worn for a few hours each day or overnight, depending on the patient’s needs. The home whitening treatment usually takes several days or weeks to complete. TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS A filling can be used to fill a cavity. A cavity is a small hole in the tooth that can be caused by tooth decay, an injury, or erosion. The filling material is used to fill the hole and can also be used to reshape a tooth. There are several types of filling materials that can be used for a filling. Amalgam, gold, composite resin, porcelain, and ceramic fillings are all options for filling material. ORTHODONTICS Orthodontics may be recommended if you have misalignments, such as underbites, overbites, crossbites, and open bites. These misalignments can lead to difficulty chewing and speaking and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. If you suffer from any of these issues, orthodontic treatment may be right for you. Dr. Lindbeck has advanced training in this field and is experienced in treating patients of all ages. GUM RESHAPING Gum reshaping refers to any of the procedures that are done to improve the appearance of the teeth or gums. There are many techniques that can be used to accomplish this. The dentist may recommend a gum lift to reshape the gum line to make the teeth look longer. For teeth that appear too long, the dentist can use a gum contouring procedure to shorten them. For teeth that appear too short, the dentist can use a gum lengthening procedure to make them look longer.
